Without further ado, let’s take a look back at some of his many screen performances.

Bosch (2014-2021)

Bosch Legacy (2022 – present)

“Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch”

For the past decade, Welliver’s embodied Michael Connelly’s fictitious LAPD homicide detective.

He originated the role in hit Prime Video series Bosch. Beginning in 2022, the actor returned to star in spinoff Bosch Legacy.

In September 2024, it was announced Bosch Legacy would end its run after three seasons – but more on that below.

Harry Bosch made his literary debut in 1992’s The Black Echo. This was over two decades before Welliver began playing him.

In fact, Connelly played a major part in casting his long-running character.

As the author explained to The Crew Reviews, Titus Welliver wasn’t on the original shortlist of actors.

However, he caught Connelly’s attention with a guest role on Kiefer Sutherland’s FOX drama series Touch.

Connelly explained: “He played a guy who had PTSD – he played it so well. You could tell he had all this inner turmoil without having to say, ‘Man, I have some inner turmoil. I have PTSD’. He didn’t have to say anything, he was able to project.”

A prolonged sequence of events followed – including Welliver shooting a movie in Hong Kong at the time.

Ultimately, the show’s casting team arranged a meeting while the actor was back in LA visiting his kids.

Discussing what happened after Welliver left, the author added: “One of our key producers goes, ‘I think that was Harry Bosch.’

“Suddenly everyone goes, ‘Yes. that was Harry Bosch.’ They turned to me and I said, ‘I think that’s Harry Bosch.'”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Meanwhile, Welliver has also displayed a deep understanding of his character’s personality and mindset.

Speaking on the Off Camera show in 2021, the actor explained: “In the second season, there’s a Detective named Ferras (Nicholas Gonzalez) who’s been partnering with J. Edgar while Harry’s been on suspension. But Jamie Hector said to me, this guy who’s playing the Detective, he thinks you don’t like him.

“He mentioned that I was kind of off. Jamie very quickly disabused him of that – he was like no that’s not Titus, that’s Harry.

“Then I felt bad, because I thought ‘Oh, I’m projecting this and I’m not a guy who stays in character.”

The initial Bosch series wrapped up its seven season run in 2021. However, Welliver is reprising the role on sequel Bosch Legacy, depicting Harry as a PI after retiring from the LAPD.

Deadwood (2004-2006)

“Silas Adams”

Starring in the first three seasons, Welliver altogether appeared in 26 Deadwood episodes.

His character on the show, Silas Adams, was a former debt collector. Later on, he became an advisor to Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), the proprietor of the Gem Saloon.

Adams’ storyline also saw him embark on an ill-fated romance with Miss Isringhausen (Sarah Paulson), who turned out to be a Pinkerton agent.

In a TVLine interview, Welliver revealed his personal contribution on the character: “David [Milch, creator) said to me, ‘I haven’t come up with a name for this character. Do you have any ideas?’

“And I said, ‘You remember my brother passed away a couple of years ago, and this is a show he would’ve loved.”

This is an example where the actor’s own background impacted the character.

Welliver added: “I’d like to name him Silas, after my older, dearly departed brother.”

To which Milch replied: “That’s great. It’s a Biblical name, it’s a great name. It’s perfect.’”

LOST (2009-2010)

Sons of Anarchy (2009-2010)

“The Man in Black”

“Jimmy O’Phelan”

The late 2000s was a particularly prolific time, as Welliver landed major recurring roles on two highly popular shows.

He featured in the sixth and final season of LOST as the show’s main antagonist, The Man In Black.

This small – but pivotal – role was also the mysterious “Smoke Monster” that had been a presence since the first season.

Despite portraying the character’s “real” appearance, Welliver was not the only actor, however, to play this role. In fact, he didn’t even have the most screen time as the character.

Terry O’Quinn, who’d played John Locke, starred as the Man in Black impersonating Locke for most of season six. Additionally, Tania Raymonde, John Terry and Adetokumboh M’Cormack portrayed different iterations.

Welliver shared his feelings towards LOST in a Looper interview: “You know, that show is still relevant and I think it always will be.

“It’s one of those shows that will continue to chart. It was original. It was unlike anything we’d ever seen before … It’s a great story.

“I’ve gone back during the pandemic and re-watched the series and it held up in a whole different way. And going back and revisiting it, I have to say, I saw it with different eyes.

“It had been a few years since I’d watched it and it still moved me and intrigued me and excited me in the same way that it did when I watched it the first time.”

Around the same time, street boss “Jimmy O’Phelan” made his first appearance on FX action crime drama Sons of Anarchy.

The character served as a major antagonist in the show’s second and third seasons.

Meeting his demise after 13 episodes, O’Phelan was the face of the True IRA. For those unaware, this is an Irish republican terrorist organisation.

In an interview with The Rich Eisen Show, Welliver revealed how certain fans continue to remind him of his time playing O’Phelan.

“The Jimmy O’Phelan character from Sons of Anarchy… obviously a favourite among career criminals. Because when I’m typically approached, I’m looking at these people and saying, I wonder how many years they’ve done in the joint.

“I don’t get a grandmother coming up and saying ‘Oh that Jimmy O’Phelan, I just loved him. It’s a guy saying, ‘When you pulled the guy’s teeth out with the pliers…”

Moreover, several other former Deadwood actors also made appearances on Sons of Anarchy.

One of many examples was Paula Malcolmson, who played “Trixie” on Deadwood. Later on, she appeared as “Maureen Ashby” on the motorcycle drama.

The X-Files (1994)

NYPD Blue (1995-1998)

Brooklyn South (1997-1998)

“Doug Spinney”

“Dr Mondzac”

“Officer Jake Lowery”

Most, if not all actors appear in recurring and guest star roles before hitting the big time.

One of the actor’s earliest TV appearances was “Darkness Falls”, a season one episode of The X-Files. Welliver played Doug Spinney, an eco-terrorist.

Although a fan of the show and interested in appearing – the star’s then-manager advised against doing so.

According to the aforementioned TVLine interview, the manager said: “‘Oh my. That show’s awful. Why would you want to do that? It’s not performing.’ He’s like, ‘It’ll be lucky if it sees another episode.”

That said, Welliver replied he liked the show, thought it was smart and wanted to do it. Naturally this paved the way for the Spinney role when it came up.

From there, he moved on to an eight episode recurring role on ABC police procedural NYPD Blue. This foreshadowed future work, as one of the show’s co-creators, David Milch, went on to create Deadwood.

Meanwhile, a turn on CBS’ Brooklyn South from 1997 to 1998 saw Welliver portray a pre-Bosch cop role.

Supernatural (2009)

The Mandalorian (2020)

Titans (2022)

“Roger/War”

“Imperial Captain”

“Lex Luthor”

The prolific performer has also appeared in multiple “genre” shows throughout his career so far.

In Supernatural season five, he guest-starred as “War”, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War assumed the appearance of a human named “Roger” – which is where Welliver came in.

Ultimately, the character’s short stint ended after encountering Sam and Dean Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively.

Coincidentally, Welliver’s on-screen brother from LOST, Mark Pellegrino, had a starring role on Supernatural. He played series regular Lucifer on The CW’s smash hit.

In 2020, the actor lent his talents to an episode of The Mandalorian, set in Star Wars’ expansive universe.

He portrayed a character known as Imperial Captain. However, this role was also short-lived as the Captain committed suicide by the episode’s conclusion.

By appearing on Titans, Welliver embodied an iconic DC Comics villain: Lex Luthor.

Airing after the original Bosch concluded, he appeared appeared in the superhero show’s season four premiere.

In the episode, it is revealed that Luthor is dying of kryptonite poisoning – and his wish is for Conner (Joshua Orpin) to take his place as President of LexCorp.

Ultimately, the legendary character does meet his maker – by way of a magic serpent crawling out of his body.

So, how difficult was it to book Welliver for the role? Prior to his guest appearance, Titans showrunner Greg Walker revealed the actor is a big comic book fan – making for an easy pitch with the Lex Luthor role.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Walker revealed: “You usually have to do this whole dog-and-pony show to get an actor to do the show. But when I called to kind of lure him in, I could barely get a word in.

“We were talking on the phone and he was just walking through his library, telling me about all his Wolfman/Perez Titans editions. He’s a giant, giant fan.

“He’d watched every episode of the show, and could tell me about certain stories, certain shots. It was the most unexpected call I’ve ever had.”

Suits (2011, 2015)

The Good Wife (2009-2011)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (2013-2016)

“Dominic Barone”

“Glenn Childs”

“Agent Felix Blake”

Throughout his career, Welliver has enjoyed guest appearances on a wide variety of shows.

For instance, Suits fans may remember him as Dominic Barone, engine designer and CEO of McKernan Motors. On The Good Wife, he portrayed the lawyer “Glenn Childs”, a rival to Peter Florrick (Chris Noth). Overall, Welliver featured in a total of 16 episodes including, notably, the pilot episode.

Perhaps Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D fans recall the character Felix Blake? He suffered a broken spine at the hands of Deathlok (J. August Richards) and popped up across three episodes.

“The Town” (2010)

“Argo” (2012)

Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

Watchmen: Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 (2024 and 2025)

“Detective Dino Campa”

“Jon Bates”

“James Savoy”

“Rorschach/Walter Kovacs”

Away from his TV work, Welliver has also starred in successful feature films. He worked with Ben Affleck on The Town and Argo among other projects.

In addition to playing lead roles, Affleck also directed Welliver in both movies.

Argo went on to win three Academy Awards. Meanwhile, it features Welliver playing supporting character Jon Bates.

As well as these roles, the actor also worked with Affleck on two other occasions: Gone Baby Gone (2007) and Live By Night (2016).

Meanwhile, Welliver also worked on a Transformer sequel – Age of Extinction. This was the aforementioned movie he’d been attached to when the Bosch team got in touch.

His character was a ruthless CIA officer working for rogue government official Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer).

Among Welliver’s more recent projects, he lent his voice to an animated Watchmen adaptation.

Titled Watchmen Chapter I and Watchmen Chapter II, these direct-to-video movies are produced by DC Studios, Warner Bros. Animation and Paramount Pictures.

Welliver voices the antihero Walter Kovacs – who is also known as Rorschach.

End of Bosch – and what’s next?

In September 2024, Deadline Hollywood and other outlets reported Bosch Legacy will conclude with its third season.

As a result, this ends Welliver’s 10-year run playing Harry Bosch as a full-time series regular. He isn’t done playing the character entirely – as the actor will reappear on the upcoming Renee Ballard sequel featuring Maggie Q.

Welliver shared a statement on Instagram: “Ten years ago I had the incredible good fortune to be cast as Harry Bosch on the series Bosch.

“For 10 years I have had the tremendous privilege to work alongside the most amazing writers, producers and cast of actors all driven by the most hardworking and incredible crew.

“We have become a family. I’m eternally grateful for every person involved in the tremendous effort it took to make the most substantive show out there.

“This all started with the genius and gift of Michael Connelly and his marvelous books.”

He added: “I could write a book (and maybe I will) on the years of joy I have experienced walking in Harry’s shoes.

“I will simply say thank you to all of you for making this the most rewarding and beautiful experience of my career.”

Bosch and Bosch Legacy are available to stream on Prime Video.
