Who is Dominic McLaughlin?
Last year, rising Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin landed the role of a lifetime.
He plays Harry Potter in HBO’s upcoming TV series based on JK Rowling’s beloved books.
That being said, let’s take a look at his wider career – from the Wizarding World and beyond.
Harry Potter

Much like the iconic boy wizard, 12-year-old McLaughlin is on the cusp of worldwide fame.
His casting was unveiled in May 2025, alongside Alastair Stout as Ron and Arabella Stanton as Hermione.
As of writing, the show’s Christmas 2026 launch is months away – although fans got a first glimpse back in March.
McLaughlin’s life will likely look different once his performance hits screens.
It’s a tough task following in Daniel Radcliffe’s footsteps, although it seems McLaughlin is up for the challenge.
He previously told BBC News of his casting: “A bit surreal to be honest, because I was always a huge Harry Potter fan when I was younger.
“And it was like the dream role, of course, so I’m thrilled to be able to be doing it.”
During an interview with BBC’s Saturday Mash-Up Live, the young actor opened up about receiving support from Radcliffe.
McLaughlin recalled: “It was insane.
“My Dad tapped me on the train and just gave me this letter.

“I read it and then I got to the bottom, and it said, ‘Dan R.’
“I was going mad, but I had to [keep cool]. I was on the train.”
McLaughlin shares the halls of Hogwarts with the likes of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost, among others.
Time will tell what audiences think of his portrayal of Harry.
Grow
In 2025, McLughlin played the supporting role of Oliver in this family comedy film.
The premise followed a girl named Charlie (Priya-Rose Brookwell), who has a telepathic connection with plants.
McLaughlin’s character, Oliver Gregory, meanwhile, was Charlie’s friend in the film.

Among the cast were Jane Horrocks, Tim McInnerny, Alan Carr and Joe Wilkinson.
Ted Lasso actor Jeremy Swift – aka Leslie Higgins – played McLaughlin’s onscreen dad.
While future Harry Potter co-star Nick Frost – who plays Hagrid – appears here as Arlo.
Gifted
Also in 2025, McLaughlin had a starring role in BBC teen drama Gifted.
The story took place in Edinburgh, following a group of teens and children learning they have superpowers.
McLaughlin played Martin, whose power is super strength – activated when he’s frustrated or angry.
Notable adult cast members included actors comedians including Sanjeev Kohli, Larry Dean and Leah MacRae.

Also in the cast were Alexander Tait as Jack, Eva MacCallumm as Amanda and Cara McFarlane as Nina.
McLaughlin spoke about Gifted in an online clips shared by BBC.
He said: “I personally think and everyone else should think, I have the best character on the show.
“And I don’t think anyone will ever be as good as my character.”
