Over the last few years, director Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher, Sex Tape) has produced two successful Jumanji films. Who will be returning for Jumanji 4?
Casting our minds back to Welcome To The Jungle, the idea of a new Jumanji film was unexpected. After all, who could forget Robin Williams’ iconic 1995 performance as Alan Parrish opposite Bonnie Hunt and Kirsten Dunst? It’s safe to say that while reviving the franchise was not on anybody’s wish list, fans still wanted the film to do well.
Kasdan managed to assemble an all-star cast to portray the primary characters, consisting of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and frequent collaborator Jack Black. Aside from being joined by Awkafina, Danny Glover and Danny DeVito in the sequel, the likes of Colin Hanks, Alex Wolff and Madison Iseman also star in the franchise.
While speaking to MovieWeb, Kasdan has already alluded to his intentions in retaining the franchise’s primary cast, saying at the time: “The whole thing, to me, is built on the foundation of those people. The game cast are these brilliant movie stars, these iconic people.” It’s an almost safe bet that fans will be seeing Johnson, Hart, Gillan, Black, and Jonas in the next Jumanji film, whenever it’s eventually made. Could Rhys Darby or Awkafina reprise their character roles from the Jumanji game? Only time will tell.
Similarly, it seems very possible that the ‘real world’ cast from the previous two films – Alex Wolff (Spencer), Ser’Darius Blain (Fridge), Madison Iseman (Bethany), Morgan Turner (Martha), and Colin Hanks (Alex), will also return for Jumanji 4. The story of the most recent films has largely been centered around these characters, especially the first four. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where they are not pulled back into the adventure – whether by choice or not.
Who knows, perhaps even Danny DeVito could make a comeback as Grandpa Eddie? Other recurring characters from Brantford, (the fictional hometown of the players), such as Marin Hinkle or Lamorne Morris may also be back.
Based on the gap between the previous two films – the fourth film was most likely set for release sometime in late 2021. However, in light of recent worldwide events, this might seem optimistic.
