At a young age, Willa Skye had already worked with actors at the top of their fields. Some of her past co-stars include West Wing actress Allison Janney, Community star Jim Rash, as well as Will and Grace’s Sean Hayes. Now, Willa is starring opposite Isla Fisher as her on-screen daughter in the new Disney+ film Godmothered. The cast also includes Jane Curtin, June Squibb and more.
Courageous Nerd chatted to Willa about her experience working on Godmothered, as well as her recent film debut Lazy Susan, directed by Nick Peet. We also found out how Willa’s acting career started and who her dream co-star is!
Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to do this.
Willa Skye (WS): Thank you!
You’re a young actor, with a growing career in the industry. Who or what first inspired you to pursue acting?
WS: Well, first I was with this little acting show, where I could put on plays with my friends. They offered if I could do an industry showcase and I was like: “Sure!” A manager saw me when I was doing the showcase, he got me an agent and I guess the rest is history.
Looking ahead to the future, do you have a dream co-star you would like to work with?
WS: I do love watching the TV show called The Office, so I really want to work with Steve Carell.
Outside of acting, what other hobbies or interests do you have?
WS: I love reading, playing with my friends, dogs and petting random cats.
You play the role of ‘Mia’ in the new Disney* film Godmothered. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the premise, could you tell us what the movie’s about?
WS: It’s about a young fairy godmother in training, named Eleanor (played by Jillian Bell). The fairy godmother land is dying because there are no more assignments, no one believes anymore.
Eleanor finds an old assignment for a 12-year-old girl named Mackenzie (played by Isla Fisher). When Eleanor finds Mackenzie, she’s actually now a 40-year-old woman with two kids – played by me (Mia) and Jane, which is Jillian Spaeder. It turns out that she doesn’t just help Mackenzie, she helps all of us.
How would you describe the process of landing the role in Godmothered?
WS: I did a self-tape audition and sent it in to the casting directors and they – Debra Zane and Dylan Jury – wanted to Zoom with me. On Zoom, we did the audition, we did the lines a few times. Then, not even the next day, I got the part.
Your co-stars in the film include Isla Fisher, Jillian Bell, June Squibb and Jane Curtin. What did you most enjoy about working with this talented cast?
WS: They were all so great, I learned so much from them. They were all so, so nice. It was so easy to work with and find bonds with them.
Another of your projects is Lazy Susan, your film debut. How different or similar are you to your character in this project? Could you describe your experience working with Nick Peet, and how he was as a director?
WS: I think me and Jenika are pretty similar. Both are cute, funny, smart, and kind. [Nick Peet] was really nice, really great, and I really liked his artistic style.
Lazy Susan has a talented cast across multiple genres – such as Sean Hayes, Allison Janney, Jim Rash and more. Are you more interested in drama or comedy?
WS: I think I like comedy more. I guess I’m more of a comedy person. I do like drama though.
If people want to find more information about your work or you personally, where can they look?
WS: I don’t have any social media, except for Instagram – @willa.skye.
Lastly, what are you most looking forward to in 2021?
WS: I really hope that COVID stops in 2021. That’s the big thing.
