HBO’s eight season fantasy epic ended in May 2019 and during that time, we were exposed to all corners of George RR Martin’s world – from Westeros to Essos.
It may surprise you that for some of the many actors, Game of Thrones was not the first time that they had starred in a fantasy epic or in some cases, the only time. Let’s take a look.
Sean bean (ned stark) – lord of the rings
The legendary actor behind Season 1’s ill-fated protagonist played another character cut down in their prime – Boromir, member of the Fellowship – in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Peter dinklage (tyrion lannister) – chronicles of narnia: prince caspian
While Tyrion Lannister actor Peter Dinklage does not typically play fantasy roles based on his stature (Tyrion was a normal man with dwarfism), he starred as the noble dwarf Trumpkin in 2007’s Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian/
Kit harington (jon snow) – seventh son
Harington starred opposite Jeff Bridges and Ben Barnes in 2014’s poorly received Seventh Son where he played ‘Mr Bradley’.
Sophie turner (sansa stark) – x men
Leaving Sansa Stark and the North behind, Turner plays a young Jean Grey in the X-Men prequels, opposite James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, among others.
Gwendoline christie (brienne of tarth) – star wars
The actress behind honourable Brienne literally moved to the Dark Side as Captain Phasma in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Charles dance (tywin lannister) – neverland
Dance appeared in the 2011 miniseries Neverland which presented an alternate backstory to the origin of the widely known Peter Pan story.
Finn jones (loras tyrell) – iron fist
Jones played Danny Rand/Iron Fist in the series of the same name, until its cancellation in 2018. He also played the character in other Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Netflix such as Luke Cage and The Defenders.
Natalia tena (osha)/david bradley (walder frey) – harry potter
Although their characters never interacted in either franchise, Natalia Tena and David Bradley have inhabited both Westeros and the Wizarding World, playing Osha and Walder Frey in the former as well as Nymphadora Tonks and Argus Filch in the latter.
Honourable mentions go to fellow Potter alumni Ciaran Hinds (Mance Rayder/Aberforth Dumbledore) and Jim Broadbent (Archmaester Ebrose)
