The Demonata originally hit bookshops between 2005 to 2009.

Darren Shan’s hit YA book series The Demonata is ‘in active development’ for a TV adaptation.

Shan shared the exciting news on his website, following news last week that a production company optioned the books.

The series follows three protagonists – Grubbs Grady, Kernel Fleck and Bec – and their fight against the demon master Lord Loss.

Additionally, the series spans different periods of time as Grubbs is from present day, Kernel lives in the 1970s while Bec is from approximately 450AD.

Production company Dreamology Pictures has optioned The Demonata for a potential TV series.

Dreamology Pictures’ posted the news on their Facebook page.

“They said: “The show is in active development, the scripts are already being written by co-creators Max Aaron and Ijaz Iqbal.”

Shan wrote on his website that Aaron and Iqbal are young and “finding their way” in the film/TV world.

He said: “They were both big fans of the books when they were growing up.

“As I’ve said many times over the years, I’ve always felt that if The Demonata was ever to be adapted, it would need to taken on by creators who had been fans when they were younger.

“I think its intricacies would prove too daunting for established industry execs who were coming to it fresh.

“By which I mean that any would-be adapters will need to know the books inside-out in order to figure out a way of adapting them. To overcome the series’ quite complex narrative structure.

“And Max and Ijaz certainly tick those two boxes!”

Darren Shan discussed writing Lord Loss, book one in The Demonata, in an interview with Courageous Nerd in 2021.

He said: “I just go for what feels right in a story – Lord Loss, the first book in my Demonata series, I actually started writing that in third-person.

“After a few pages, it just didn’t feel right to me.

“I had planned to do it in third person. It didn’t give me the immediacy and the intimacy that I wanted.”

Shan went on to add while development is in very early stages, he’s confident the writing duo know the books.

He said: “The plan right now is to put together a script that they can then shop around, in the hope of catching the eye of a studio with the funds to take things forward from there.

“We’re all going to need to keep our fingers crossed for luck. But hey, let’s not forget that we have Lord Loss on our side, and HE has LOTS of fingers!!!!”.
