On The Masked Singer UK Season 2, Dragon has proved to be one of the former confusing contestants. However, fans may have unearthed their identity. Is former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins behind the mask?
The Masked Singer UK recently returned for Season 2 on ITV. Half of the new line-up was introduced – Robin, Swan, Alien, Sausage, Badger, and Dragon. So far, the latter has proved to be one of the most confusing to figure out.
Fans and judges alike are divided over key aspects of the anonymous performer’s identity. This even includes their gender and Nationality. Guesses from the judging panel ranged from Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett), former footballer turned television presenter Dion Dublin, Grand Designs star Kevin McCloud and stand-up comedian/QI presenter Sandi Toksvig.
Davina McCall was the only judge to guess that Dragon is female – and it seems she could be on the right track. In the days following Dragon’s performance, prevalent online guesses include former Celebrity Big Brother winner Courtney Act. Another name suggested was comedian, presenter, and writer Sue Perkins, known for the comedy double act ‘Mel and Sue’ and presenting The Great British Bake Off during the show’s stint on BBC. Much like McCall and Rita Ora’s guesses of Toksvig and Ferguson, both are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
In particular, could Perkins be behind the Dragon mask? Firstly, the Dragon’s multi-coloured chest, which judge Rita Ora used to identity the performer as a member of the LGTBTQ+ community, could also apply to Perkins. The 51-year-old has openly been a lesbian since 2002 and in a relationship with TV presenter Anna Richardson since 2014. Furthermore, the cash shown inside a house during the Dragon’s clue package may be referencing Perkins’ 2002 stint on Celebrity Big Brother. Finishing in fourth place of six contestants, she competed alongside then-Family Fortunes presenter Les Dennis and Take That’s Mark Owen, among others.
However, a 2017 YouTube video is the most conclusive clue (or unconvincing, depending on how you look at it) that Perkins may in fact be hiding behind the Dragon mask. In the clip, Perkins is shown singing to a crowd at the Edinburgh Festival while playing an acoustic guitar. Whether or not she sounds like Dragon did is up to subjective opinion.
Do you think Perkins could be the Dragon? Who else do you think could possibly be on The Masked Singer UK this season?
