Episode 1 of The Masked Singer UK Season 2 has aired and the identity of one Masked Singer is now known. Find out who was revealed and who may be under the remaining masks.
After experiencing success earlier this year, The Masked Singer UK has returned for a second season.
Presenter and I’m A Celebrity alum Joel Dommett is once again at the helm. Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross also make a comeback as panelists, now joined by comedian Mo Gilligan.
In the new episode, fans were introduced to six of the show’s new characters: Robin, Alien, Swan, Dragon, Sausage and Badger. After everything was said and done, it was down to Alien, Swan and Badger in the bottom three. Ultimately, the judges opted to save Swan and Badger, leading to Alien revealing herself as singer-songwriter and model…. Sophie Ellis-Bextor!
Prior to unmasking, the “Murder on the Dancefloor” vocalist had performed “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa.
Although Alien has been eliminated from the show, the five other anonymous contestants have progressed to their next appearance, in two weeks time. Looking at the online consensus, fans seem positive they have nailed some identities, while being stumped on others.
Let’s take a closer look at everyone who successfully passed the first round of performances.
Robin was the first performer of the season to grace the stage, wowing the judges with a rendition of “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake, which won him the face-off against Alien. Some boxing references initially made the judges think Robin was an athlete, before his voice revealed that he was in fact a performer.
Online Guesses: By far, the prevalent guess online as of now is former JLS bandmember Aston Merrygold. Other guesses have included outgoing EastEnders actor Jake Wood (aka Max Branning) and singer Olly Murs.
Courageous Nerd Guess: While Merrygold does seem like a good suggestion, we’ve gone in a different direction entirely. Our guess for Robin is singer-songwriter and record producer, Lemar Obika (otherwise known by the mononym Lemar). Let’s take a look at how the clues could fit.
London Accent – Lemar is from Tottenham, in North London.
Boxing references – Not only is there a similarly named Lemarr range of boxing apparel, Lemar also famously had a Sport Relief boxing match against television presenter Ben Shepherd in 2008.
EastEnders/Albert Square Reference – Lemar appeared in the EastEnders Christmas Party episode in 2004, where the character Nana Moon (Hilda Braid) was shown to be a fan.
Fly Without Wings – Lemar appeared with Westlife on TRL UK in 2005.
In her first performance on The Masked Singer UK, Swan performed “That Don’t Impress Me Much” by Shania Twain. While this looked to be her swan song for a moment, she ultimately survived the final three.
Online Guesses: So far, a popular guess has been former Strictly judge Dame Darcey Bussell, which was also mentioned on the show. Similarly, fans have echoed judges’ guesses such as former Pussycat Dolls Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Roberts, both of whom reside in the UK.
Courageous Nerd Guess: Dancing clues seem to suggest Darcey Bussell. However, Davina McCall was shown to recognise the voice – fellow guess Kimberly Wyatt was a judge on Sky One’s Got To Dance, which McCall hosted.
Swan’s opponent, Dragon, opted to sing Toy Story classic “You’ve Got A Friend In Me”, both winning and confusing many fans in the process. Who exactly could be behind this fiery mask, with even the gender being uncertain?
Online Guesses: Fans have been all over the place, ranging from comedienne Sue Perkins, former Steps member Ian “H” Watkins, actor/singer Luke Evans and Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden.
Before even trying to figure out the identity, is Dragon male or female?
Courageous Nerd Guess: Dragon has been very confusing – and it’s too early to lock in a confident guess. That being said, former Great British Bake Off co-presenter Sue Perkins seems like a good suggestion.
Sausage was the penultimate performer of the night, taking on Dragon in the third head-to-head face-off. Delivering an absolute ‘banger’, Sausage sang “Skin” by Rag’N’Bone Man which ultimately won her place in the next show.
Online Guesses: Fans online have guessed names including former Doctor Who actress Billie Piper, Loose Women panellist Stacey Solomon, presenter, and author Stacey Dooley, as well as presenter Maya Jama.
Courageous Nerd Guess: All the popular online guesses seem viable at this point, but we’re currently leaning towards Stacey Dooley as being behind the Sausage mask.
As the final performer of this first group, it was Badger’s responsibility to end the episode on a high. Do you think he managed it? Badger sang “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, only just falling short against Sausage and finding himself in the bottom three.
Online Guesses: Popular guesses to emerge include Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall and Blur singer Damon Albarn. Meanwhile, fans on Reddit have suggested Americsn singer-songwriter Ne-Yo as a possibility.
Courageous Nerd Guess: Once again, it’s still early days and making a definitive choice is difficult. However, the Damon Albarn guess seems convincing thus far.
