Batwoman: Why Ruby Rose Left

by Conor O'Brien

In May 2020, Australian actor Ruby Rose exited The CW superhero drama Batwoman after just one season. More recently, Rose has opened up on why she made this decision.

Back in May 2018, it was announced by Mark Pedowitz, President of The CW, that the character of Kate Kane (also known as Batwoman) would be debuting in the shared ‘Arrowverse’ continuity with the then-upcoming crossover, Elseworlds.

Ruby Rose, an Australian native known for her role in Orange Is The New Black, was later cast in the role. Following positive reception in the crossover, Rose received her own Batwoman series developed by Caroline Dries (Smallville, The Vampire Diaries). However, in May 2020 – two years after the character was announced – Rose revealed that she was leaving both the character and the Arrowverse behind following Season 1 of her show.

So, why did Rose decide to leave Batwoman. There have been different theories floating around the internet however, there is one source more reliable than any: Ruby Rose herself. The actress recently opened up to Jess Cagle on SiriusXM about leaving the series:

“It wasn’t [the back injury]. That definitely made going back to work so quickly tricky. They really accommodated trying to help me out the best they could, going back so early. We wanted to obviously meet the release date of the show. I think what played a bigger part was more, we got shut down early. We didn’t get to finish the first season, which is such a shame, especially for a first season show.”

The 34-year-old actor and model continued: “We all kind of thought about where we’re at and, and, and so did Warner Bros. and Greg Berlanti, and we were discussing the show and we sort of mutually agreed that probably what was best for the show, at the time, was they go in a different direction and I go in a different direction.”

“I think that everything we set out to do, we accomplished, and I feel like as far as Kate’s story, it kind of made sense now that handing over the mantle to somebody else would be a very sort of creative process for the producers and for the show. And then for myself, of course, saying goodbye to that character is sad, but I also am excited for everything else that’s coming up.”

In the wake of Rose’s departure, God Friended Me alum Javicia Leslie was cast as the new lead for Season 2. Leslie will be playing Ryan Wilder, described by Variety as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits.”

The report continued by saying: “Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

Batwoman airs on The CW.
