Eclipso: ‘DC’s Stargirl’ casting new villain for Season 2

by Conor O'Brien

Geoff Johns’ new hit series DC’s Stargirl is bringing in Eclipso for Season 2. Thanks to a recent interview at New York Comic-Con, the latest details about Eclipso are now known.

DC’s Stargirl, the brainchild of former DC Comics COO Geoff Johns, debuted in May 2020 on DC Universe and The CW. The series centers on Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, a comic book character created by Johns, based on his late sister. Brec Bassinger (Bella and The Bulldogs) stars in the title role.

In the first season, Courtney and her newly assembled Justice Society of America (JSA) fought against the malevolent Injustice Society of America (ISA), led by Icicle (Neil Jackson) and also consisting of Brainwave (Christopher James Baker), The Gambler (Eric Goins), Tigress (Joy Osmanski) and Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins).

However, a new season means a new threat and in this case, Stargirl’s new foe will be Eclipso, who was teased in the Season 1 finale. A 2017 blog on described the character as: “a shadowy villain with the ability to corrupt just about anyone on the planet.” Furthermore, Eclipso is described in more detail as: “a creature completely untouched by time. Eclipso is willing to lie in wait, hide in plain sight and scheme his way into the perfect opportunity to strike.”

During a recent interview alongside the cast at New York Comic-Con, series showrunner Geoff Johns disclosed that casting was underway for the character of Eclipso. “We’re just starting to cast him so we’re looking for that. I’ve got these wonderful designs from LJ Shannon [costume designer], what he’s going to look like.”

Johns continued: “It’s such a different, darker scarier threat because the threat is… Cindy’s (Meg DeLacy) one thing, she’s got the black diamond and we’re obviously going to explore that. But the thing inside, the entity that’s trapped, this ancient being that feeds off humanity’s own sins, grief, fear and darkness…. aching to do what he does and feed off the darkness within humanity. It’s going to take a lot to confront it. It’ll take the JSA and every one of our wonderful characters to a place that’s tough for them to explore.”
