Batwoman alert! Former God Friended Me actress Javicia Leslie has been cast as the new lead on The CW series. Learn more about the new face of Gotham City in the Arrowverse.
Javicia Leslie, who co-starred in CBS’ God Friended Me, will remain under the Greg Berlanti production banner as the new lead for Batwoman on The CW. Variety and numerous other outlets reported this news on July 8.
Leslie played the role of “Ali” on God Friended Me for 2 seasons. The character was an out woman, barista and sister to the main character, Miles Finer (Search Party star Brandon Micheal Hall). However, that show came to an end in April 2020 after being cancelled earlier in the year.
Starring opposite Leslie and Hall were Scandal‘s Joe Morton, Life of Pi actor Suraj Sharma and another member of the Arrowverse, Violett Beane, who formerly played Jesse Quick on The Flash.
According to Variety, Leslie’s new character on Batwoman is Ryan Wilder, described as ” likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane (previously played by Ruby Rose), the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
Following in the footsteps of her predecessor Ruby Rose, who is openly lesbian, Leslie also confirmed her own bisexuality when discussing her new role. Furthermore, she also acknowledged being the first African-American to play the DC heroine.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community”, the actress said in a statement after her casting was announced.
Prior to her leading roles on God Friended Me and Batwoman, Leslie has also starred and guest starred in other television series. She played the character “Monisha” on Chef Julian between 2015-2017 and also potrayed “Paris Duncan” on The Family Business between 2018-2019. Additionally, the actress guest-starred in 2 episodes of the CBS MacGyver reboot, starring Lucas Till.
Leslie joins Batwoman’s returning cast members, which includes Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson and Dougray Scott.
