Unlike their younger counterparts in the Justice Society of America (JSA), the actors behind Stargirl’s villains have much longer and more diverse resumes. Here are 5 projects you may not have realised starred members of the ISA.
On Stargirl, the Injustice Society of America (ISA) is populated by characters such as Icicle, Brainwave, Tigress, Sportsmaster and Gambler, among others. Each member is different to one another, both in powers and sensibilities. However, this makes them a stronger team as one person’s strength is another’s weakness and vice versa.
In real life, the actors playing the ISA on Stargirl are Neil Jackson (Icicle), Christopher James Baker (Brainwave), Joy Osmanski (Tigress), Neil Hopkins (Sportsmaster), Eric Goins (Gambler), Hina Khan (Fiddler), Nelson Lee (Dragon King) and Joe Knezevich (Wizard).
For each of these cast members, Stargirl is not their debut professional role. Having more experience means appearing in more projects encompassing a variety of characters, genres and networks. This includes some examples that even the most observant of Stargirl fans may not have realised.
1. Blade: The Series (2006) – Neil Jackson
More than a decade before Neil Jackson (Icicle) collaborated with Stargirl creator Geoff Johns on the DC Universe/CW series, the pair worked together on a very different comic book-inspired series.
Blade (Eric Brooks) is a Marvel Comics character that was adapted into a film trilogy (1998-2004), starring Wesley Snipes in the title role. In the 2006 television series, Kirk Jones (Sticky Fingaz) was recast as Blade while Jackson played villainous vampire, Marcus van Sciver.
Unfortunately, the series only lasted for a single season. However, Jackson would ultimately make some important connections during his time on Blade. Geoff Johns was one of the staff writers. Meanwhile, fellow future Stargirl ISA member Nelson Lee (Dragon King) had a series regular role as Shen.
2. LOST (2004-2010) – Neil Hopkins
On Stargirl, Neil Hopkins portrays Larry “Crusher” Crock, a sleazy gym owner in Blue Valley. Crusher is married to high school gym teacher Paula Brooks (Joy Osmanski) and father to tomboyish Artemis (Stella Smith). Secretly, however, Crusher is a member of the Stargirl ISA as Sportsmaster.
While Hopkins’ Stargirl character is All-American, he adopted a faux Manchester accent on-and-off for six seasons on LOST. He played recurring Liam Pace, older brother and former bandmate to 815 survivor Charlie (Dominic Monaghan). Liam was once a heroin addict and ultimately was the reason that Charlie, once a devout church-goer, had followed in his path.
Hopkins first appeared in “The Moth”, episode seven of season one. He made his final appearance as Liam in the series finale of LOST.
3. Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019) – Joy Osmanksi
Santa Clarita Diet, a horror-comedy television series, aired for three seasons on Netflix between 2017-2019. Lead character Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore), a suburban real estate agent, becomes undead and craves human flesh, hence the show’s title.
Joy Osmanski had a recurring role in Santa Clarita Diet, as Alondra, a friend of Sheila’s. More recently, however Osmanski has relocated to Blue Valley, Nebraska, where she plays Tigress on Stargirl.
Tigress is actually the aforementioned Paula Brooks, wife to Crusher Crock and mother to their daughter, Artemis. As one of two Blue Valley High School employees within the ISA, Paula is unknowingly in the presence of her new enemies – students Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), Yolanda Montez (Yvette Monreal), Beth Chapel (Anjelika Washington) and Rick Harris (Cameron Gellman), on a daily basis.
4. Ozark (2017 – present) – Christopher James Baker
Ozark, a crime drama currently airing on Netflix, follows Martin “Marty” Byrde (Jason Bateman), a financial advisor and money launderer who relocates his family from Chicago to Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.
Australian actor Christopher James Baker has made appearances in a number of comic book-based television series – Agents of Shield, Gotham and now Stargirl, where he plays Dr. Henry King Sr./Brainwave, a feared member of the ISA. However, Baker’s role on Ozark was quite different to this fantasy fare.
Baker played season one recurring character Boyd Langmore, the somewhat unintelligent brother to hardened criminals Cade (Trevor Long) and Russ (Marc Menchaca). Boyd was also the uncle to his brother’s respective children; Ruth (Cade) as well as Wyatt and Three (Russ).
5. Sleepy Hollow (2013-2017) – Neil Jackson, Joe Knezevich
Sleepy Hollow aired on FOX for four seasons between 2013 and 2017. The series was a retelling of Tim Burton’s 1999 film starring Johnny Depp. This adaptation featured Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane, a soldier and history professor from the 18th Century, who mysteriously ended up in present-day.
Once again, Neil Jackson makes an appearance in this list. On Sleepy Hollow, Jackson played a recurring role as Abraham Brunt for ten episodes between 2013 and 2015.
Additionally, Joe Knezevich, who plays William Zarick/The Wizard, made an appearance as a character named “Father Daniel” during the first season.
