Fans still have not met two members of Stargirl‘s original JSA. Here is a fan casting for legendary speedster Jay Garrick, better known as the first Flash.
DC’s Stargirl’s main storyline has focused on the titular hero, whose real name is Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) and her efforts to create a new-look Justice Society of America (JSA) in small-town Blue Valley, Nebraska. However, as of writing, the backstory for the original heroes has not been fully explored yet, including the introductions of some members.
Until someone is hired for the role, here is the Courageous Nerd fan casting for one of the most iconic DC characters, The Flash.
Although Grant Gustin stars as Barry Allen on The Flash, his character is from Earth-1 in the shared continuity. Stargirl and that universe is within Earth-2 of the new multiverse created by Crisis on Infinite Earths.
As well as this, pictures have shown that the costume worn by JSA’s Flash depicts Jay Garrick, the first person to hold the mantle in DC Comics. John Wesley Shipp (Dawson’s Creek/The Flash 1990) recurs as Garrick on The Flash.
Speaking to IGN, Stargirl creator/showrunner Geoff Johns said the following: “Green Lantern and Flash] are spoken of and they exist in the JSA. There’s a picture of them in the first episode, and there’s plans in the future for things, but Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, to me, are always the elderly statesmen. They’re the big heroes of the JSA and their shadow is very long and they’re great characters. They are a part of the original JSA and their legacies will be felt throughout the show. I don’t want to spoil too much about it, but I can leave it at that.”
Some older JSA members who have already been introduced are: Stripesy (Luke Wilson), Starman (Joel McHale), Hourman (Lou Ferrigno Jr), Wildcat (Brian Stapf) and Dr. Mid-Nite (Henry Thomas). Each of latter four now have a successor in Courtney Whitmore’s new Justice Society of America.
However, neither Jay Garrick or his heroic alter-ego The Flash have gotten the spotlight as of yet. Actor C. Thomas Howell (Red Dawn, Criminal Minds) could be a good choice to play the role in Stargirl.
Howell starred opposite Henry Thomas in classic children’s film ET. As seen previously, the Arrowverse is no stranger to reuniting former co-stars. Furthermore, at 53 years of age, Howell is slightly older than the actors already playing members of the original JSA. This would satisfy Geoff Johns’ “older statesmen” comment about Garrick and Alan Scott.
However, perhaps the greatest argument for casting Howell is the fact that he’s already connected to the world of DC Comics, more specifically The Flash. The actor has voiced Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash in numerous direct-to-video animated projects. Furthermore, this hypothetical casting would mirror John Wesley Shipp, who has played live-action versions of The Flash while voicing Thawne in animated form.
Who do you think should be cast as Jay Garrick/The Flash on Stargirl?
