The Flash: Hartley Sawyer Fired, Showrunner “Mad As Hell”

by Conor O'Brien

The Flash star Hartley Sawyer has been fired. Read for more details on why the actor, who played Elongated Man, was let go from the CW drama.

The Flash‘s Hartley Sawyer has been fired ahead of Season 7, TVLine has confirmed. The actor, 35, played the role of Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man on the hit CW series. However, in May 2020, numerous racist and misogynist tweets written by Sawyer resurfaced.

His Twitter account was deactivated shortly thereafter.

At the time that the tweets became public knowledge, Sawyer took to Instagram. He wrote “My words, irrelevant of being meant with an intent of humor, were hurtful, and unacceptable. I am ashamed I was capable of these really horrible attempts to get attention at that time. I regret them deeply. This was not acceptable behavior.”

Since news of Sawyer’s dismissal from The Flash broke, some of his former colleagues have spoken out in response to his words.

Showrunner Eric Wallace shared a statement on Twitter, writing “This morning, many of you learned that Hartley Sawyer will not be returning for Season Seven of THE FLASH. Concerning his social media tweets, they broke my heart and made me mad as hell.”

Additionally, Grant Gustin, who plays Barry Allen/The Flash, also shared his own thoughts on the matter. His comments were in response to Wallace’s statement.

“I don’t have much to add because Eric’s thoughts are stated so eloquently and powerfully.” Gustin wrote, “I will say I was shocked, saddened and angry when I saw the tweets. Words matter.”

During Season 6 of The Flash, the iconic comic book romance between Ralph and Sue Dearbon/Dibny (Natalie Dreyfuss) had begun to take shape. Now that Sawyer is no longer on the show, the future of this dynamic on the series remains to be seen.

The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Nicolet, Tom Cavanagh and Jesse L. Martin.
