In 2010, Jon Bernthal got the role of Shane Walsh on AMC’s then-new zombie drama The Walking Dead.
He has been working professionally since 2002. Early roles include television series such as How I Met Your Mother, Without A Trace, CSI Miami, Boston Legal and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
Shane was the one-time best friend/former police partner of main character, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). He was a member of the original survivor group that Rick joined in season one.
Shane and Rick’s relationship soured for a number of reasons, including having an affair with the latter’s wife. Bernthal left the show in 2012, after Shane was killed off
Therefore, Bernthal had to use the Walking Dead’s platform in order to propel his career forward.
Between 2013 and 2014, Bernthal starred as LAPD Detective Joe Teague, the main character in TNT’s short-lived crime drama Mob City. The show also starred Milo Ventimiglia, Neal McDonough and fellow Walking Dead alum Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale Horvath).
Some of Bernthal’s major film roles since leaving The Walking Dead include The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, Snitch and The Accountant.
Bernthal played the Marvel Comics vigilante Frank Castle/The Punisher in two separate series. Daredevil (2016) and The Punisher (2017-2019).
In 2018 and 2019, Bernthal guest starred as ‘Ilan’ in two episodes of sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He also lent his voice to various video games, such as Call of Duty and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon.
Bernthal’s upcoming films for 2020 and 2021 include Those Who Wish Me Dead (with Angelina Jolie) and King Richard (with Will Smith and Liev Schreiber).
