Andrew J. West, star of The Walking Dead (Gareth) and Once Upon A Time (Henry Mills) is the focus of Actor Spotlight #57.
Actor Spotlight is a feature in which the career of a singular actor is analysed. We discuss their life, career and the impact they had on their projects.
Andrew J West began his acting career in 2006. Although his initial projects were short films, he has since appeared in both feature films and numerous television series.
Between 2009 and 2010, West had a recurring role on Greek. It was on this series, a comedy-drama, that the actor met his wife, Amber Stevens. West’s character, Fisher, was the unfaithful boyfriend of Stevens’ Ashleigh.
His guest appearances include shows such as Bones, Ghost Whisperer, Castle and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
In 2014, West landed the role of Gareth, a leader of cannibalistic survivors, in The Walking Dead. Appearing in the fourth and fifth seasons, West was promoted to series regular for the latter, being killed off after four episodes.
Following on from this, West had roles in shows such as Justified, Under The Dome and Minority Report. He also appeared in feature films including the title role in Walter, released in 2015.
In 2016, West played the role of Damon Crowley in six episodes of Freeform’s Dead of Summer, created by Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis and Ian Goldberg.
West did not know at the time that Dead of Summer would lead to one of the most high profile roles of his career to date.
Following Dead of Summer’s cancellation after one season, West was cast as an older version of main character Henry Mills on the long-running ABC fairy tale drama Once Upon A Time.
Jared Gilmore previously played the character for the first six seasons. West made his debut in the sixth season finale, alongside Alison Fernandez as his daughter, Lucy.
West became a series regular on Once for season seven alongside returning stars Lana Parrilla, Colin O’Donoghue and Robert Carlyle. This ultimately became the final season of the series.
In April 2020, West reunited (via video chat) with Once co-stars Jared Gilmore (Younger Henry), Sean Maguire (Robin Hood) and Lee Arenberg (Grumpy/Leroy) for Wizard World.
West will again reunite with former co-stars from Once, for a good cause – Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Parrilla, Gilmore, O’Donoghue and Maguire are also confirmed to be involved.
What’s next for Andrew J. West? That remains to be seen. However, if his previous work is anything to go by, it will surely be exciting.
